Storm aftermath: a 24-hour septic checklist

What to check before you flush, and the order to do it in.

• Look for standing water over the drainfield — do not pump the tank if groundwater is high
• Minimize water use for the first 24 hours after the storm passes
• Check for sewage odor inside the home or near the tank
• Do not open tank lids while the area is wet
• Note any gurgling or slow drains and write down the time
• If saltwater reached the system, plan a follow-up inspection in 30–60 days
• Document any damage with photos for insurance
