Checklist
Storm aftermath: a 24-hour septic checklist
What to check before you flush, and the order to do it in.
- Look for standing water over the drainfield — do not pump the tank if groundwater is high
- Minimize water use for the first 24 hours after the storm passes
- Check for sewage odor inside the home or near the tank
- Do not open tank lids while the area is wet
- Note any gurgling or slow drains and write down the time
- If saltwater reached the system, plan a follow-up inspection in 30–60 days
- Document any damage with photos for insurance
