Checklist
Should I pump my tank now? A quick checklist
Five signs your tank is overdue, and three that mean wait.
- It has been 3+ years since the last pumpingFor most Florida households, 3 years is the realistic ceiling.
- Drains are slower across multiple fixturesNot just one sink — that's usually a clog.
- Gurgling sounds in toilets or showers when nothing is running
- Faint sewage odor near the tank or drainfieldEspecially after rain.
- You recently hosted extended guests or a long-term tenant change
- Wait if: groundwater is currently high after heavy rainAn empty tank can float out of the ground.
- Wait if: you just pumped within the last 18 months and nothing is wrong
- Wait if: a contractor pressures you mid-service call with no evidence of fullness
Pumping is the cheapest preventative maintenance you'll ever do on a septic system, but pumping unnecessarily isn't free — and pumping at the wrong time (high groundwater, recently emptied) can create problems. Use the checklist above as a first pass, then ask for sludge and scum measurements before committing.
